How Internet Search Engines Work

Internet search engine.
Internet search engines are special sites on the Web that are designed to help people find information stored on other sites. There are differences in the ways various search engines work, but they all perform three basic tasks:
  • They search the Internet -- or select pieces of the Internet -- based on important words.
  • They keep an index of the words they find, and where they find them.
  • They allow users to look for words or combinations of words found in that index.

Chapter 7 Internet

Arctic sea ice at second-lowest in modern record is among many rapid changes in new climate reality: This IS climate change.

The launch of Al Gore's "Climate Reality" group and the beginning of the public education project "This Is Climate Change" are new initiatives to bring the science of climate to the public. No matter what lies and distortions and misunderstandings are put forth by those who think climate change is not real -- the atmosphere continues to be flooded with greenhouse gases and the effects are observed worldwide. Millions of people across thousands of miles of the Earth's surface are living in this reality. Here are some of the images and science observations documented by World View of Global Warming.
And around the world, thousands of plant and animal ranges studied in long-term observations are moving toward the poles at an average rate of 15 feet per day due to climate change. In the United States, plant growing zones are up to 200 miles farther north as average temperatures increased in every state -- both high temperatures and low temperatures -- during the warmest decade of 2001-2010. Violent and record weather events like heavy rainstorms, floods and droughts -- such as the spring deluges in the Ohio Valley, the Mississippi River floods and the Texas drought --- occur more frequently, another signal of a warmer, wetter atmosphere.

Chapter3 Sources of knowledge : Libraries

About the library and link to 5 library websites.

9.1 Identity the difference between Library of Congress Classification System (LC) and Dewey Decimal Classification System (D.D.C).

The Library of Congress Classification System (LC)Libraries use classification systems to organize the books on the shelves. A classification system uses letters and/or numbers (call numbers) to arrange the books so that books on the same topic are together. This arrangement results in "serendipitous browsing:" you find one book in the catalog, go to the shelf, and, an even better book is sitting right next to it.Libraries in the United States generally use either the Library of Congress Classification System (LC) or the Dewey Decimal Classification System to organize their books. Most academic libraries use LC, and most public libraries and K-12 school libraries use Dewey.
The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC, also called the Dewey Decimal System) is a proprietary system of library classification developed by Melvil Dewey in 1876.
It has been greatly modified and expanded through 23 major revisions, the most recent in 2011.This system organizes books on library shelves in a specific and repeatable order that makes it easy to find any book and return it to its proper place. The system is used in 200,000 libraries in at least 135 countries.

Chapter 2 Objective Facts, Subjective Opinion

                                                             Rafael Nadal
Objective Facts

Rafael "Rafa" Nadal Parera (born 3 June 1986) is a Spanish professional tennis player and a former World No. 1. As of 29 August 2011 (2011 -08-29), he is ranked No. 2 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time;[3][4][5] his success on clay has earned him the nickname "The King of Clay", and has prompted many experts to regard him as the greatest clay court player of all time.
Nadal has won ten Grand Slam singles titles, including six French Open titles, the 2008 Olympic gold medal in singles, a record 19 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments, and also was part of the Spain Davis Cup team that won the finals in 2004, 2008 and 2009. He completed the career Grand Slam by winning the 2010 US Open, being the seventh player in history, and the youngest in the open era, to achieve it. He is the second male player to complete the Career Golden Slam (winner of the four grand slams and the Olympic Gold medal) after only Andre Agassi.
Nadal had a 32-match winning streak in 2008, starting at the 2008 Masters Series Hamburg to the 2008 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters and Women's Open, which included titles at Hamburg, the French Open (where he did not drop a set), Queen's Club, his first ever title at Wimbledon, and the Rogers Cup. In 2011, by winning the Monte Carlo Masters, he became the only player to have won seven editions of a tournament in a row at the ATP level. Nadal was ranked world No. 2, behind Roger Federer, for a record 160 consecutive weeks before earning the top spot, which he held from 18 August 2008 to 5 July 2009.[9] He regained the world No.1 ranking on 7 June 2010, after winning his fifth French Open title.[10] He held it until 3 July 2011, when Novak Djokovic replaced him as world No. 1.

Subjective Opinions

Rafael Nadal Denies Shakira Affair Ru

Shakira / Rafael Nadal
Everybody's talking about Shakira and Rafael Nadal having an affair. And what is spycier is that we all like it, although they are both seeing someone else. It looks like this rumor has affected, at least Nadal, since he denied any romantic connection to Shakira.
Benito Perez-Barbadillo, Nadal's representative made a statement in which he made it clear that his client and the Colombian singer are not an item.
According to Benito, the night Nadal and Shakira were spotted dining at a Barcelona hotel before shooting a video together, meaning last week, Nadal's manager Carlos Costa, and video director Jaume de Laiguana were also at the restaurant. So he claims it wasn't quiet a romantic dinner. "We were all there, and Shakira only came when we'd finished the main course to have something to drink, accompanied by her manager, Ceci Kurzman, and Jaume. It was a dinner organised with the director to brief Rafa on what was expected from him in the video", the Daily Express quoted him as telling the New York Post.
Xisca Nadal TENNIS GOSSIP: RAFAEL NADAL PLANNING TO PROPOSE TO XISCA
Tennis ace Rafael Nadal pulled out all the stops to make his holiday with his girlfriend as romantic as possible… but then had to pull out himself. (*wait, is that a double – maybe triple – entendre, or am I a pervert?*)
It was to tie in with his stint playing at the Thailand Open. But Rafael had to drop out at the last minute because of an injury to an abdominal muscle.
The 23 year old had booked into the five-star Thailand resort of Rayavadee, picking the three-bedroom villa facing the sea, for himself and Maria Francesca Perello, 20, whom he has been with for four years.
He also reserved a private boat for a day, private plane and three dedicated butlers.
The trip had set him back around £50,000 and a source says: “It was to be a very important holiday for the two of them and Nadal wanted everything to be as romantic as possible, leading to speculation that he is thinking of proposing.”

Chapter 1 Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom

Data
The term data refers to qualitative or quantitative attributes of a variable or set of variables. Data (plural of "datum") are typically the results of measurements and can be the basis of graphs, images, or observations of a set of variables. Data are often viewed as the lowest level of abstraction from which information and then knowledge are derived. Raw data, i.e. unprocessed data, refers to a collection of numbers, characters, images or other outputs from devices that collect information to convert physical quantities into symbols.

Contents

[hide]

The word data is the Latin plural of datum, neuter past participle of dare, "to give", hence "something given". In discussions of problems in geometry, mathematics, engineering, and so on, the terms givens and data are used interchangeably. Also, data is a representation of a fact, figure, and idea. Such usage is the origin of data as a concept in computer science: data are numbers, words, images, etc., accepted as they stand,

Information

Information in its most restricted technical sense is an ordered sequence of symbols that record or transmit a message. It can be recorded as signs, or conveyed as signals by waves. Information is any kind of event that affects the state of a dynamic system. As a concept, however, information has numerous meanings.[1] Moreover, the concept of information is closely related to notions of constraint, communication, control, data, form, instruction, knowledge, meaning, mental stimulus, pattern, perception, representation, and especially entropyOften information is viewed as a type of input to an organism or system. Inputs are of two kinds. Some inputs are important to the function of the organism (for example, food) or system (energy) by themselves. In his book Sensory Ecology, Dusenbery called these causal inputs. Other inputs (information) are important only because they are associated with causal inputs and can be used to predict the occurrence of a causal input at a later time (and perhaps another place). Some information is important because of association with other information but eventually there must be a connection to a causal input. In practice, information is usually carried by weak stimuli that must be detected by specialized sensory systems and amplified by energy inputs before they can be functional to the organism or system. For example, light is often a causal input to plants but provides information to animals. The colored light reflected from a flower is too weak to do much photosynthetic work but the visual system of the bee detects it and the bee's nervous system uses the information to guide the bee to the flower, where the bee often finds nectar or pollen, which are causal inputs, serving a nutritional function.

Knowledge
Knowledge is a familiarity with someone or something, that can include facts, descriptions, information, and/or skills acquired through experience or education. It can refer to the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. It can be implicit (as with practical skill or expertise) or explicit (as with the theoretical understanding of a subject); and it can be more or less formal or systematic. In philosophy, the study of knowledge is called epistemology, and the philosopher Plato famously defined knowledge as "justified true belief." There is however no single agreed upon definition of knowledge, and there are numerous theories to explain it.
Knowledge acquisition involves complex cognitive processes: perception, learning, communication, association and reasoning; while knowledge is also said to be related to the capacity of acknowledgment in human beings.

Wisdom

Wisdom is a deep understanding and realizing of people, things, events or situations, resulting in the ability to choose or act or inspire to consistently produce the optimum results with a minimum of time, energy or thought. It is the ability to optimally (effectively and efficiently) apply perceptions and knowledge and so produce the desired results. Wisdom is also the comprehension of what is true or right coupled with optimum judgment as to action. Synonyms include: sagacity, discernment, or insight. Wisdom often requires control of one's emotional reactions (the "passions") so that one's principles, reason and knowledge prevail to determine one's actions
